Rise Above the Plastics with the Surfrider Foundation -
Tuesday, July 7 at 7:00 PM
Surfriders Rise Above Plastics campaign aims to reduce the
impact of plastics in the marine environment by raising awareness about the
dangers of plastic pollution and by advocating for a reduction of single-use
plastics and the recycling of all plastics.
The Rise Above Plastics campaign advocates for local cities
to ban the use of single-use plastics. So far this year, Surfrider and other
local groups have been instrumental in the adoption of legislation to eliminate
the use of plastic and biodegradable bags in grocery stores in the cities of
Santa Monica and Malibu.
But more than the program goals, this campaign by Surfrider
West LA/Malibu is successful in organizing all of us -- ocean adventurers and
landlubbers alike -- in taking real action in saving our oceans.
Katherine Nguyen, from Surfriders West LA/Malibu
chapter, will come and tell us more about the project, what we can do as divers
to support conservation programs, and what Surfrider is doing right in our
backyard. The meeting starts at 7:00 PM at Eco Dive Center.

Franko's Map Guy - |
|
 |
|
|

|
 |
Franko will tell us how an avid-cyclist and engineer becomes one of the world's most famous mapmakers. With a degree in Ocean Engineering and not a lick of map making training, Franko has pioneered adventure map-making for SCUBA divers, mountain bikers, hikers, and thrill-seekers. One of his newest maps helps tourists to Hawai'i examine the... childhood of President Barack Obama on Oahu.
Franko's story is almost as unique as the man himself. Swing by a little early to mingle with other divers and grab a bite to eat. The presentation and famous raffle -- featuring dive gear and goodies -- start at 7:00 PM!
